Dr. Mirko Paiardini received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Pharmacology in 2003 from the University of Urbino, wherein he also completed post-doctoral training under Dr. Mauro Magnani. After serving as a Research Associate under Dr. Guido Silvestri at the University of Pennsylvania, he was recruited to Emory University in 2010. He is a Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Emory University’s School of Medicine, Research Scientist in the Division of Microbiology and Immunology at the Emory National Primate Research Center, and co-Director of Emory University’s Center for AIDS Research (CFAR). Furthermore, he serves on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Virology and as Associate Editor for Pathogens and Immunity; a study session reviewer for the NIH, National Science Foundation, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research; and a member of the External Scientific Advisory Boards for the Duke University Medical Center and AbbVie.

His research portfolio utilizes simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-infected nonhuman primates to characterize mechanisms of viral persistence amid long-term antiretroviral therapy (ART) and harness novel immune-based strategies to facilitate viral remission. In 2021, he was awarded an UM1 grant to establish the Enterprise for Research and Advocacy to Stop and Eradicate (ERASE) HIV Collaboratory to investigate the role of dysfunctional cytotoxic CD8+ T cell responses in favoring SIV persistence; establish if CD8+ T cell-mediated transcriptional silencing promotes the maintenance of viral latency; and determine if immunotherapies that elicit effective cytotoxic CD8+ T cell functions, while inhibiting CD8+ T-cell-mediated virus silencing, effectively promote viral remission.
